Giveaway book - 3 stories to read Anytime Anywhere Anyhow

City of Mandurah staff and volunteers have been busy creating gift bags containing a giveaway book which we will distribute throughout Mandurah.  Pictured above are National Year of Reading volunteers Frances Hazelwood, Sally Webb and Peter Shiner with the gift bags.

The State Library of Western Australia produced the giveaway book as part of their READ! Anytime Anywhere Anyhow adult literacy program.  The book is called 3 Stories to read Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow and is recommended for people aged 18 years and over.  The three short stories in the book reflect contemporary life in WA and were selected to appeal primarily to adults in the 18 - 30 age group to encourage them to rediscover the joy of reading.

The three stories are:
The Kid on the Karaoke Stage by Sj Finch,
The Man with the Moustache by Jon Doust, and
My Scallywag Suit by Erin Pearce.

Staff and volunteers will be distributing gift bags at various locations throughout Mandurah over the coming weeks.  Look out for us wearing the distinctive National Year of Reading logo.

Find us at the following places and times:
  • Centro Mandurah, Thursday 28th June, 9am - 2pm,
  • Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, Thursday 28th June, 4 - 6pm,
  • Outside the offices of the Peel Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Mandurah Transit Station on the morning of Friday 29th June,
  • The Parents Place, Ormsby Terrace, Tuesday 3rd July, 9 - 11.30am, and
  • Eastern Foreshore and central Mandurah shopping district, Friday 6th July, 11am - 3pm.
Please take a giveaway book for yourself or give one to someone else to encourage them to treat themselves to a reading break.

School Holiday Fun

From craft activities, drawing and games to bookclubs, storytelling and group art projects, the Mandurah Libraries are a great place to spend your school holidays! So join us for some fun and games with your friends at the libraries.

A schedule of planned activities is available now, so check the library branches or newspapers or download them here:
Mandurah Library School Holiday Activities and Falcon eLibrary and Community Centre School Holiday Activities.

Be sure to book your child's spot as places are limited. All activities are FREE!

For more information, please contact any of our friendly library staff.

Included these holidays are three story-time sessions for older children to link in with a show presented at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

We invite you to
attend one of three continuous readings
of
Tim Winton's novel
'Blueback'.

If you don't know the story or would just like to hear it again, why not join us and listen to one of Winton's most personal and quintessentially Western Australian Stories. Blueback depicts the life of a young boy Abel and his mother, their relationship with the environment, and their desire to protect and preserve the natural habitat of the place they call home.

The reading sessions are on:
  • Tuesday 10th April at 1pm at Falcon eLibrary and Community Centre,
  • Thursday 12th April at 1pm at Mandurah Library, and
  • Monday 16th April at 10am at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
No need to book, just come along.  Suitable for ages 5 plus and adults are welcome too.  There will be plenty of breaks and we estimate the reading will take approximately one and a half hours.  Children will be able to work on a craft activity while they listen to the story.

Then don't miss Peta Murray's stage adaptation of Blueback at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre from Wed 18th to Saturday 21st April.

This show is a mesmerising experience full of underwater imagery and exquisite puppetry. Beautifully crafted puppets of crabs, eels, abalone and coral create images of an underwater garden. This is a visual and an emotional journey through a stunning landscape, a fable for all ages that reminds us of why we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The First Wednesday Book Club

You are invited to the inaugural meeting of the

First Wednesday Book Club
at
Cafe Pronto
(corner Pinjarra Road & Mandurah Terrace, Mandurah)
on
Wednesday 7th March from 7pm-9pm

The topic of discussion at this book club is simply “great reading”.

This is a book club for:
  • keen readers who love discussing what they are reading and have recommendations to share;
  • those who do not want to commit to reading one particular title each month;
  • busy people with limited time for reading for pleasure.  Come along and get that must-read recommendation to inspire you to treat yourself to more reading time; and
  • those who can’t promise to make it every month but would love to attend whenever they are able.

Share your opinions on the latest adaptations of books to movies, TV shows or stage productions (One for the Money, We Need to Talk about Kevin, The Slap, The White Divers of Broome to name a few).

Pass on reading material you have finished with or take away one of Mandurah Libraries’ “Read and Release” books.

Let others know about an interesting magazine you have discovered, an addictive blog you love or any other great reading.

Treat yourself to a glass of wine, a delicious dessert or tasty snacks from Cafe Pronto’s menu.  Have a fun evening sharing the joy of reading in the company of other keen readers.

Please feel free to invite your friends and pass this message on.

If you can’t make it this month then never mind, put the next First Wednesday, 4th April, into your diary now!

This book club is hosted by City of Mandurah Libraries as part of the National Year of ReadingIt is open to everyone but please RSVP to Deidre Robb on 9550 3237 or Deidre.Robb@mandurah.wa.gov.au so we can advise Cafe Pronto of estimated numbers.

Online Book Club @ Mandurah Libraries

As part of The National Year of Reading 2012, Mandurah Libraries have started a new book club: an online one. The Online Book Club @ Mandurah Libraries officially launches on February 1st and will continue throughout 2012.

The Online Book Club @ Mandurah Libraries is open to anyone who would like to take part. Discussions take place over Twitter and a new topic is put forward each month; for example February’s theme is ‘Who done it’. You’re not limited to just books for your discussions; you may wish to explore magazines, blogs, website, journals or anything else as long as it is relevant to the chosen topic.

To join in the discussions, head over to The Online Book Club's blog here where you will find all the information about how to get started. Discussions begin on the first of each month but feel free to join in at any time.
